Main Line Family Photographer | Fun at Home

There is nothing that I love more than coming into a family’s home to capture their authentic, everyday lives.

I love documenting story time and meal time and snack time – cuddling, laughing, and maybe even some fighting. I love that these pictures will only become more meaningful and treasured as time passes. Soon, they will tell the story of what every day used to look like, as kids grow and routines change.

I have been photographing this family since their oldest was one. Last Fall, they won the documentary session contest that I ran. It was so much fun to photograph them in this different way. Although I have loved all of my sessions with them, this one was really special. I know that ten years from now, seeing these photos will bring back memories of when the littlest still carried around his lovey, when the oldest got mom and dad all to himself for nap time, and when mom was expected to carry two little people down the steps at once.

It’s all so impermanent and time goes too fast. It feels good to be able to bottle a bit of it up, to pin it down in a photo that you can hold in your hand forever and show your children as they grow.

This is what life used to be like…

Documentary Family Photography | The Perfect Day

Documentary family photography has my heart.

The day-to-day activity in a happy home is my favorite thing to photograph for my clients, hands down. There is nothing like capturing the genuine moments and love; kids playing legos, making messes with their lunch, and snuggling with mom and dad. It all goes so fast and these mundane details of life, often go unnoticed. We don’t realize how special they are until our kids have grown up and moved on to a new phase of life. So giving my clients a time capsule of these moments in their lives, memories that they can hold on to, feels like the most important thing that I do.

A couple of months ago, I ran a contest giving away a documentary session with the launch of my new website. It was so wonderful reading all of the entries! This awesome family won and I could not have had a better day with them. I arrived in time for breakfast, watched as they played with their brand new Christmas toys, did some school work, had lunch, and went down for a nap. Having photographed this family so many times, since their oldest was just a little guy, but this was a totally new experience, a totally new way of seeing their family. I just love them.

I’m sharing a slideshow from our busy morning together. As the song notes, I think it was a pretty perfect day.

All of my documentary sessions come with a custom slideshow, like this one. Interested? Contact me at katie@kmcmenamin.com and let’s chat!

In Home Documentary Family Session | Little but Loud

Whenever I do a shoot for Lauri and her family, I feel a little extra nervousness and excitement. Aside from being my very awesome friend, she is such a talented photographer. I always want to make sure that I give her images that are as lovely as the photos she has taken of my family. Luckily, her kids are so cute and her family is so loving that it makes my job easy. We always have fun and I just love my sessions with them.

We decided to start out this shoot with some in home documentary photos, capturing a bit of their daily routine. The kids played on the swing set, in their play car (the cutest thing ever), they made stone soup, and colored. Afterwards, we also headed out to the most beautiful riverbank that I’ve ever seen for some more posed photos. I will save those photos for another day.

These are a few of my favorites for my time at home with these cuties.

Christmas in Philadelphia | Philadelphia Documentary Photographer

I just love this family. I have been photographing them since their oldest guy was just a year old. This last year, I was lucky enough to photograph them twice! Once we did a little shoot around their Philadelphia neighborhood for some Christmas card photos and then I got to come back to capture a storybook session for them! Both boys are so sweet and well-mannered and I kind of just love hanging out with them on our shoots. I think you can really see their sweet little personalities in these photos.

I remembered that we’d taken photos of this guy in front of this garage door back when he was just two, so I went back into my archives to do a little comparison. 2012 and 2015. He’s so grown up!

For our Storybook session, I photographed the family decorating the Christmas tree. There was also a brand new train that was a HUGE hit with both boys. Love!
